ABOUT KAREN WANG

I use data and computational journalism to visually tell investigative stories. Right now, I'm graduating from Columbia University with Computer Science and Journalism degrees, and I'm an engineering intern at The Washington Post's Reporting Tools team. Currently, I also help manage ML-driven experiments at the Local News Lab of Brown Insitute.

Previously, I was a data reporting fellow at Brown Institute for Media Innovation/MuckRock. I was also a data fellow on the investigations team at McClatchy Washington Bureau, working with newsrooms such as Miami Herald to write data-driven stories and create interactive visualizations for investigative projects. Further back, I also interned at BuzzFeed News to help the award-winning FinCEN Files investigation and uncover the insufficient COVID-19 testing at meatpacking plants nationwide.

When interning at KPCC/LAist, I helped the organization reach its diversity, equity and inclusion goals by engineering its content planning system and improving source tracking workflow across different teams. I also worked on data-driven projects such as the California medical parole investigation and local election guide.

I was also a managing editor, WeChat editor and reporter at Annenberg Media while studying at the University of Southern California.

Check out my latest work on data and graphics, and reporting in English and Mandarin. Or, my resume.
